EgoPo Classic Theater from Philadelphia with Jogja’s Papermoon Puppet Theater and Kalanari Theatre Movement are creating a retelling of The Ramayana outdoors to be performed in Philadelphia in the Summer of 2024. The staging integrates the puppetry, dance, music and theater practices of the three companies, utilizing performative traditions from their respective cultures expressed through contemporary forms. The ancient tale’s message of radical kindness and the profound respect for all lives is critical at this moment in human history. Instead of fearing difference, perhaps we can focus on the common thread that binds us together while celebrating our differences as a source of strength. This presentation will show parts of the work created during a month-long development process.Funded by the Pew Center of Arts and Heritage
